Alt-az Design Ideas? new
      #3394507 - 10/17/09 12:15 PM

I recently purchased 2 new refractors (selling the 8 SCT) along with a TAK EM200. I am looking to build an alt-az mount for the scopes for to simply set up and observe in 5 minutes. Also, I live in a LP area, so, this will be for mainly for planetary high mag ep's (50-200x)

I would like to design the mount so either the SV102 or WO66 can be used indpendently, or with WO66 the attached in tandem to the SV102 (already has guide rings)

I already have a contractors tripod which I use with my P-mount, and was thinking of using this tripod as well. I also have an extra v-type saddle plate so it can be permantly attached to the alt-az mount. both scopes have v-type dovetails.

I saw a pic of something I am thinking of by brian roth on the stellefane 2007 contest winners site...

Any ideas. plans, forseeable problems, links etc would be very helpful.

Ron had some great designs.
Orions little table top scopes should not be too hard to copy in a wood shop.
ScopeStuff has all the teflon and parts you should need.
This archived thread has lots of great mounts.

Ever heard of 80/20 extruded aluminum? It comes in square sizes like 1" and 1.5" as well as other sizes. You could make a simple alt-az mount out of three plates of aluminum and one piece of 80/20. Since the 80/20 is slotted on all four sides, you can configure this mount in different ways easily. What you end up with is a mount along the lines of a DiscMount, but at a fraction of the cost. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3527/3287007742_a944d8b96a_m.jpg

8020 IS nice stuff. It's one downside is that it's very pricey.

They have an ebay store, where they dispose of returned items, close outs and end of runs. Much better deal. But you have to look thru the items individually which is not as easy a buying from their big catalog.

Yes, BUT wood is so much easier to use and will definately dampen the vibrations

The Helix-Hercules mounts are some of the simplest/sturdiest alt-az design's going... a saddle within a saddle. This is one based on their design I made out of aluminum/had powdercoated for my Nikon D90 with a Sigma 500mm zoom telephoto. It can be scaled to any size, and made out of metal or wood. Operation is extremely smooth and solid.
