OK finally managed to see M31 at a high altitude and so had a chance to see the galaxy in a wide 40mm eyepiece. Strong glow but unfortunately could still not see the dust lanes I understand you can see under darker skies.

I feel like I am at the eyepiece when I look at that sketch.

Are you certain that you posted it in the right forum? That looks photographic in quality!

Just curious....what telescope were you using and under what type of light pollution?

Jack, I use a Celstron Nexstar 8SE. As to light pollution - it varies - before midnight I generally have city lights from Bristol to the south up to 20 degrees. However on some nights I strike it lucky - usually after midnight. You'll notice I rated the sky a "I" because it was clear enough to see a brief inkling of the Milky Way (my usual test) and M31 was pretty much up at the zenith. My attempt earlier in the year was not so useful.

Fantastic sketch, Chris! This reminds me of the view I had of M31 and M32 this past Saturday night through my 6-inch achromat from a fairly dark sky site. I didn't see the dust lanes, though, either.

By the way - I've started using a template system for my sketching and have to admit that your format influenced how I set mine up. It's definitely made my sketches more organized and "neater" in overall appearance.
