When you create a custom white balance (Covington suggests just shooting at the sky), is it the same or similar to taking a flat frame? So it's not really that important. White balance is telling the camera what color white is. The colors constantly change around us with different lighting from blue to red usually. Our brain automatically compensates for these color changes keeping white white, but the camera can not do this, thus you have to set the light color temperature. Wb and flats are not really connected. Flat frames are taken to evenly spread luminosity data over the photograph to remove problems like dust motes, or vignetting due to the equipment your using.
