Greetings! What are the main differences between the Oberwerk and the Universal Astronomics Surveyor's Tripods, other than price and appearance?
I'm considering one to mount 16X70's on, with a UA PMount; moreover, l might also substitute with the use of a Bogen 501 fluid head or 410 Geared Head, depending on feedback from this forum.

Rich, a light surveyor works fine with a light Unimount. Consider one with an adjustable speader for versatility. They're simple and sturdy.
If you plan on using one tripod for p-gram use as well as video head use, I recommend one of the geared column tripods with 26# capacity like the Manfrotto 475. The geared column comes in handy for comfortable use with the video head. Every time you change the angle of the binocular you'll need to raise or lower the head a little; it's nice to crank it up or down.

Standard large wood surveying tripods such as my old UA all black with single leg lock and my realatively newer UA black and natural wood, when spread to a 60" triangular base the top plate is 64" high. They are variable in setup, so if you set the legs to a 48" triangular base the top plate will be 67" high. Although now a different color, this seems to be what UA offers as their heavy wood tripod and probably similar to the Oberwerk 10" upgrade mentioned below.
the Oberwerk surveyor tripod that comes with the BT100, also in different wood sold as the Jharah wood tripod, has a fixed spreader just like those on telescope tripods, with holes to attached a standard triangular tray. The base spreads to 44" and the top plate is 54" high. This is the currently offered Oberwerk Wooden Tripod. They do offer a taller (gain 10") upgrade in the standard wood.
Oberwerk sells a deluxe heavy duty wood surveyor tripod for heavy loads. It has double leg locks screw type at bottom and lever type at top of leg. The base when spread to a 66" triangular base puts the top plate at 72" high. I can mount my GPDX equatoral mount on top of this tripod and the top of the EQ mount will be nearly 7' high. This allows me to use my 48" long CR150 telescope, when pointed nearly straight up, from a standing position. The eyepiece will be approx 5' off the ground. This is by far the most robust and tallest of the surveyor tripods.
A light surveyor maxes out even with a Unimount Light when you've got 8# of binocular and 12.5# of counteweights. That's about a 26# to 28# load. When I was testing UA Unimount for my Mounts article, I found the osscillations never settled out. Larry recommended a Medium weight surveyor. That helped.

The standard Oberwerks tripod has single leg locks. It is made out of an extremely light weight wood. This makes it easy to carry into the field but is not as rigid as others I have used. I would consider it light duty. I have a BT80 mounted on a Helix mount on this tripod. There is noticeable flexure. But since the max power I use in the BT80 is 29X it is not a problem. I think using the BT100 at higher power would be annoying on this setup.

Thanks to all of your responses. They were extremely helpful. I will be getting the 475 tripod with the 501HDV head.
