AT8RC shot of NGC 281 Pacman Nebula
      #3397392 - 10/19/09 02:43 AM

Hello,
It's been pretty cloudy and cold in Ohio lately. We were suppose to have clear skies all night but that changed dramatically. I was able to get NGC 281 for a few hours.
The data are as follows:

AT8RC scope with WO 0.8 FR/FF
Rebel XS Modified camera
19 subs for 10 minutes each @ ISO 800
Processed with IP 3.8
EQG Mount

I would appreciate your comments or suggestions. The object can be seen here:

Thanks, Steve

Very good indeed

I would try two further steps - local contrast enhancement via the guassian blur/high pass filter method and second some controlled colour saturation.

This will increase contrast around the dust lanes, bok globules and the pillars and strengthen the colour in the emiision areas and the bright stars

Whats the weird yellowish curved streak across the top part ?

Does using the wo ff change the image scale on this scope?

Bob,
It takes the focal ratio from f/8 to f/6.4. Steve

Great shot Steve! You're making me want to try my TV x.8.
Are you having to add an extension ring when you use the FR?

Gary,
No I use both extensions that come with the scope. Go ahead and try your televue. You'll know right away how it will work. I really like the Bahtinov mask in focusing, though. Steve

Steve, I am only using the 2" @1625mm, but my FR requires more back focus so I may have to add a 1" to get focus. I'll try that soon..
The Bahtinov can't be beat! But if my feeble brain lets me remember in the future, I want to see if the focus routine in ImagesPlus will get me any closer. I've never used it before, always done well with just the mask, but I read about someone using IP after a mask and their results were stunning...

Gary,
I use the Bahtinov mask in conjunction with IP. I take a 2 second shot and blow it up and look for the spikes. Steve

I am just getting my AT8RC ready for duty and have this question: Was yours colimated out of the box?

No, mine was not properly collimated and I still think it is off a touch. but it is very close. One of these nights when I have one of my buddies with me, I will do a better collimation. Steve
