Ok, so maybe I stretched the heck out of this one, but hey, its neat to see the faint clouds outside of m42. Gotta look close, but there's a bit of stuff there.
SW ED80 pro with TeleVue 0.8x reducer (400mm f/5)
24 x 2 min + 58x30sec (used just for the core of m42 since it blew out on the 2 min exposures)

Thanks guys. I may try to improve on it next month with some longer exposures to bring out even more dusty lanes. I do like how this dusty one looks compared to most M42's I've seen.

Nebulosity is what I use to stack my frames and apply darks and flats. That leaves me with a 16bit TIF which is nearly 100% black.
I then bring that into Photoshop and use curves on it, among other things, until I like how it looks. In this images case, I did 2 totally separate M42 images (one at 30 sec and one at 120sec exposures) and then blended in some 30sec data in the core of the 2 min M42 image, since it was super blown out. This was again done using photoshop, not any HDR software.

I ask because I'm looking to get into DSLR astrophotography and would like to do so without getting a PC. It seems like if I had nebulosity, PhotoShop, and Orion's Solitaire autoguider (no computer needed) that I could successfully image from my Mac.
Any suggestions?

Yes that is a good plan. If you wanted to avoid having a stand alone autoguider you could buy a meade dsi and use it through PHD for mac. I successfully use My canon XS DSLR to image through mac osx.

This shot could easily be done without a PC actually. At 400mm f/5, you dont need an autoguider. You may get some ruined exposures, so you may have to let the rig take photos for longer and you throw out the bad frames when you get back to your computer.
The autoguider is a new thing added to my setup only last month, and I took many photos I'm happy with the few times I shot before using a CG-5 mount and a 750mm focal length.
Anyway, I use a canon TC-80N3 timer to do all the automation of capturing. Similar timers exist for Rebel cameras, for about $60.
If you do decide in the future you need to guide, you could always just pick up a $300 "netbook" PC with windows XP on it, which is what I did. It'll be better than going with the solitaire autoguider, as you get a live video preview of what the autoguider sees which makes focusing easy, and it also lets you visualize your mount drift over time via the graphs displayed in PHD Autoguiding software.
