I have both a CG5 and an EQ6. The EQ6 is streets ahead of the CG5 mechanically-the tracking is far superior but the software in the Celestron is just terrific especially the any star polar align
The CGEM here in Australia costs 30% more than the EQ6. I would pay this if mechanically the CGEM were as good as the EQ6 because of the superior software
But is the CGEM as good ? or is it more like the CG5 mechanically?

They are essentially the same mount mechanically...not really an upgrade. Have you tried using EQMOD with your EQ6 connected to a computer to control the mount? By all accounts it makes up for most of the differences between the hand controllers.

Having carefully studied both mounts at NEAF, the build quality and finish of the CGEM is significantly better than the Atlas/EQ-6.
I can't comment on the field performance of these two mounts, but in general I greatly prefer the Celestron Nexstar over the Synta Synscan too.

Surprising that -in July this year I visited the Synta factory in Suzhou where (I think )both these mounts are made
saw the EQ6 being assembled and there was a CGEM on display but didn't recall actually see it being made though I saw plenty of other Celestron models being assembled
Yes maybe EQ mod is the great leveller -but it still doesnt have the any star polar alignment feature does it?
( I spent three hours a couple of nights ago trying to get the EQ6 polar aligned and it really got me to appreciate the any star convenience of the CG5)

Basically the same mount imo. The only real advantage to the CGEM is the hand controller software. I still cannot believe how accurate the GOTOs are with this mount compared to my Sirius mount. Just this past Friday night I leveled the scope and roughly centered polaris using a wide field eyepiece. Then aligned with 2 stars and added 2 more calibration stars. It put every object dead center of the eyepiece for a full 6 hour observing session. My sirius and my old LX200 could not even come close to that kind of goto precision. Keep in mind that the CGEM is louder when slewing or doing a goto.

I think EQ6 polar alignment can be done simillary as CGEM by use of AlignMaster software. You can download it and try it free for one month.
For me, EQ6 has only disadvantage to CGEM in porly designed and constructed Alt adjustment bolts.

downloaded align master .. I dont think it is quite as simple as the Celestron one star alignment..havent tried in the field yet, but with the two star routine maybe you achieve greater accuracy in alignment-in which case, bargain!
The CGEM here costs not 30 % but 50 % to 100% more depending on which retailer one gets a price from...pricing seems crazy to me
makes it very hard to go beyond alignmaster + eqmod for the EQ6-assuming alignmaster works as advertised
