I have an RCX400 14", that will only align itself etc. when connected to my laptop through the proper usb cable. I don't even have to have autostar open on the computer. When I disconnect from the laptop, and turn on the scope, I will at some point get a message which says "downloading, do not turn off". Has anyone else run into this, and know of a fix short of shipping back to Meade? Any insight would be appreciated.

Welcome to Cloudy Nights. RCX owners have reported many things here over the years but I think that your question is a new one for us. I don't have the answer myself, but I expect that some folks will be along soon with some suggestions.

Does the scope operate properly if you don't hook up the laptop?

Hi,
No, it will not operate at all withouth the laptop connection, and laptop on of course. When disconnected from the laptop, all I get is the downloading message. When connected to the laptop, all works properly.

Do you know the trick to turn it on in safe mode and then redownload the firmware? I would try a reset first, however you will need to retrain drives and maybe the recalibrate sensors as well.
My rcx never breaks because I never use it! Trying to work out my observatory situation and then hopefully that will change.
This is an autostar2 issue and not an rcx issue per se so the fix is probably generic as well. What's your power supply situation?

I agree with Joseph's assessment. The scope computer needs either the AutostarII hand controller or the laptop hooked up for it to operate. I would check the cable for the AutostarII and the hand controller itself for proper operation. First thing to do is the reset if possible. Just like a home computer, if an installation is interrupted, every time you turn it on it tries to finish the installation. You need to clear the memory.

Thanks for replying guys....I am glad to have learned of this community...
I have discussed the problem with tech support at Meade, and have downloaded the latest firmware into the autostar in the safe mode. And after all that, the scope will not initiate by its own without being connected to the computer.
As to the power supply, am using a 5 amp power supply connected directly to house current. I do disconnect the usb cable from the scope when attempting to power up independent of the laptop.
thanks to all for your assistance...
