Homemade observing chair new
      #3397015 - 10/18/09 09:02 PM Attachment (47 downloads)

Well, I finally was able to find the time to finish building my chair from scratch. There are a few tweaks I would do to my design for a second one, and I still have some sanding to do, and then the finish on it, but here it is. What do ya'll think?

It looks very nice. Do you have a way to connect the front and back legs to keep them from spreading or closing? Occasionally I'll lean forward on my home made chair enough to lift the back leg off the ground.

Very nice, looks slender (perhaps a tad too much?)

What wood did you use?

I was going to say the same thing, maybe a rope to stop the back spreading too far out?

Sorry, forgot to mention that I am going to mount a rope that will hold the back leg.

The front is 6" wide, and the back leg is 4.5" wide. the support legs where the seat and foot rest catch are 2.5" thick. Everything seems to be plenty strong for my rather, um, svelte 280. Everything on it is solid red oak. All of the dowel rods are 1", except for the foot rest(1.25"), and the rod that connects the front and back(3/4"). The front has a hidden dowel connection for looks, and everything else is just a dowel connection from the outside. Those are all 3/8" dowels. I don't know if I want to stain it, or probably just go with a clear coat on it.

Regarding the use of a rope between the two legs: In use, the tendency is for the back leg to creep forward, rather than backward. I started out with a length of seat belt between the legs, but after a couple observing sessions I switched it out for an aluminum bar. That is what the "Denver Chair" plans call for, with good reason IMO. Something to keep in mind.

The chair looks great, I'm sure you will love it.

I used an aluminum bar on my chair, too. It keeps the leg rigid and I usually just stick my arm in the top and carry it to the new position. I also put aluminum guards on all the feet that contact the ground to save the wood from wear, especially when setting up on concrete or asphalt.

I have an aluminum bar on mine as well. For coating you might try some Boiled Linseed Oil (BLO). It's quick and easy to apply (or reapply) and looks good too! Wipe it on and wipe off the excess.

I guess I never thought it would want to creep forward as opposed to wanting to slide back. I think I'll go with the aluminum bar in it instead of rope. Thanks for the heads up.
