Hi All:
I just happened across an inexpensive misc batch of 'microscope' eyepieces, objectives and accessory bits. While going thru them, two items popped out - a couple of Zeiss eyepieces labelled 16mm and 8mm. Well I've bought a fair number of microscope EPs in the past and they are never labelled with focal length alone - typically they're labelled as "10x" "20x" etc. And the vast majority have a barrel diameter around .91". These are 0.965" on the nose! Looking at the arrangement of elements, these sure look like orthos and not the typical Huygens / Ramsden type microscope EPs. Could these really be Zeiss orthos for astro use? They don't quite look like the couple of other Zeiss orthos I have on my Telementor II, as these have a bakelite (or similar) hard screw on eyecup. I'll post a couple photos below. If they are what I hope they are, I understand the 8mm Zeiss orthos are extremely rare (like Zeiss Abbe territory if you can find one :-) If anyone can vouch for what they are, I'm all ears!

Hi All:
I couldn't wait to get home tonight and try these puppies out. First of all, tonight was the first partial clearing I've seen in over a week! So I dragged out the Telementor II and popped these two in - one at a time - on the turret with my Zeiss O-4 and Zeiss O-16 (orthos). First the 16mm - crisp, clear, razor sharp to the edges, and dark background - just like looking thru the O-16. Tried the 8mm - just as sharp and dark A very little bit of patchiness -- not surprised - this one was very dirty and I only gave it a quick clean at the office. I'll have to give them both a really good inspection and cleaning as needed. Even so, I'm very impressed with these two!
I was hoping to have some confirmations by now, since this post has been read already over 50 times... but either way, I'm very happy with them - these are definite keepers!

Don they look like Zeiss to me. They are strange ones but anything that have that logo is worth keeping for sure. Send Dan Scheckter a PM he has a large collection of Zeiss.

Hi Donn,
I've got a set of those, as you may see here http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/3001803/page/0/view/collapsed/sb/5/o/all/fpart/all/vc/1 So I went to the eyepieces box to check.
The 16mm looks pretty much like an Ortho. The 16mm Huygens has a way smaller eye lens. The 8mm as well seems more like an Ortho or a Mono than a Huygens.
Your series look similar to mine (I have the logo, f and design around the eye lens though). It is weird that Zeiss did not put a mark on it re the optical design. This may happen on spotting scopes eyepieces, but those would be Huygens then. And, again, that 16 is definitely not one of those.
Just check the eye lens: in the Ortho is flat, in the Monocentric is convex.
Hope it helps! Take care,
Max
