Here is one you don't see often Sears 60mm Model 79 24104 was sold in the Sears Christmas Catalog (wish book) in 1971 sold for $49.99.This scope was a gift from my parent for Xmas when I was 13.As I recall the scope was not all that bad for planet viewing ( for a kid).I have some fond memories with this scope.I remember selling it to a local astronomy club member in order to gather up some cash to buy a Edmund 6" reflector 1976.At that time it made no sense to have more than one scope least that's what my parent said at the time.
Well needless to say I found one in very good condition on Ebay and still with the original box.I got this one for about $50.00 I could not pass this one up. Their is something very different about this scope look at the photo's carefully and see if you can tell what it is, how many Sears experts are out there?

Well, you got me. I thought I knew Sears pretty well but the only difference I can see is:
It's not a Towa 60mm, nor an Astro Optical which I think were the 2 companies that Sears contracted with......
So what is it ? The tube holder kind of looks like a Bushnell scope that I had once - an 800mm one. But this one looks at least 900mm maybe even longer....

this one is 900mm f/l Made in Japan
The difference is not so much in the OTA itself, things started to change in the 70's if you look at the photo of the mounting head. The Sears ad states " 300x Refractor Telescope with Professional-type Equatorial mount"
The darn thing is completely made of "PLASTIC" even the slow motion control cables are plastic the only thing on the mount that is made of metal are the adjustable legs.Maybe not a collectors item but I still think it's kind of neat to have. AGAIN

the ad is 1971 Christmas catalog page 164. you can find them on Flickr. They post a lot of the Wish Books their but I have a feeling that the regular Sears catalog may have been different. It's hard to find anything on the Sears Reg catalog to view.I did come across a 1971 wish book on Ebay selling for $75.00 who would have known?

dont you always find that stuff advertised as professional with the word type after it is a cheap copy- eg swiss army 'type' penknives, invariable made from cheap metal and not a patch on the originals. grendel
