That's a Herschel wedge for solar observation. Do not use it on it's own. It must be used with a ND 3.0 filter to be safe.

Thanks for asking this question Chuck, I was wondering about the hole as well. I am guessing most of the Sun's image/light goes out the hole, a bit goes up to the eyepiece?

Hi Tom,

Yes, that's why all I see the ground I suppose In all my many years I never actually handled a Herschel wedge before this one. I was able to find some info on Robert's site, the ad calls the wedge a 'Sun prism' (see attached pic)

Yes Cman, it's listed in their 1968 catalog as an 'accessory'.
