NGC7331 & Stephan's Quintet
      #3399892 - 10/20/09 10:37 AM Attachment (30 downloads)

I just spent this evening processing this stack of the deer lick group and stephan's quintet. The image data was acquired this past Saturday night at the Fish Lake star part in Lapeer. The skies stayed clear all night but the seeing was not great to say the least. As a result of the seeing the image is a bit softer than my first attempt at this target but the data is of much higher quality. I am hoping to get out this next weekend or next month to capture a couple more hours on this target. Please feel free to CC.

Image Details -
31 x 4mins @ ISO1600 (124 mins)
33 Darks
75 Flats
63 Bias
350D Mod
Orion 8" Newt w/MPCC
Guided with Orion 80ED
Atlas EQ-G
Stacked in DSS and PP in CS3

Thank You For Looking,
Jason

Hi JGibson,

I would like to image this. I have a DSLR and an F7 110mm refractor; would I be able to fit them in, or should I go with a 45mm Widefield scope I have (F4.3)? Also, do they hit the Meridian relatively early in the evening?

Thankyou and wonderful shot!!

Paul

Hello Paul,

Your 110mm f/7 scope should fit the two groups no problem. I am shooting with a 350D and an 8" f4.9 Newtonian (F=1000mmm). I suspect your exposure lengths will have be considerably pretty long unless you have a focal reducer. The two groups will fit between the narrow width of my 350D's sensor but will be a little more forgiving if I rotate the camera 90 degrees. I love observing these two groups with my 12" dob and had the pleasure of using an 18" Starmaster this past weekend to observe these galaxies.

I look forward to seeing your work on this target.

The views through the 18" Starmaster with a 17mm Ethos was breathtaking!!!!

Thanks,
Jason

Very clear image despite the relatively low time, due probably to the number of subs. I bug some people sometimes to take more shorter exposures, but everyone seems to the think the longer the better (not always, depending on your tracking accuracy and other factors like focus shift, flexure, etc.)

Thanks for the complaiments. Take a look at my first attempt. I am very pleased with the improvement. Now if only Michigan were located in the southwest United States and I lived in a remote corner of hte state I would be all set!

Definately an improvement, that's a great set of targets for your focal length. Very nice Image.

Jason,
You pulled out a LOT of detail in the various Galaxies here. Nice processing job!
