A lot of (beginning) observers use the Messier list for finding relative bright objects. However, there are much more bright objects to see in the night sky, but aren't part of the Messier list.
Because we haven't found a decent, obvious list with bright objects, several members of the Dutch forum www.astroforum.nl made the Bright Objects Catalogue, or BOC.
You can find the list here: http://www.astrowiki.nl/index.php/Bright_Objects_Catalogue
Here you can find (in the attachments), the list for Meade Autostar: http://www.astroforum.nl/astroforum-s-boc-lijst-autostar-tour-t20871.html

Demelza,
Thanks for the list. I'll look over it and see if any have slipped through the cracks in my own personal observing list. To me it always makes sense to do the bright, easy stuff first!

Google does a fine job of translating the BOC from Dutch to English.
