Drum Shells
      #3400633 - 10/20/09 05:14 PM

Hi,

Failed to find a reference using the search.

Someone posted a link to a site with a wide range of drum shell sizes suitable for OTA's.

Could someone re-post or get the search to work.

Cheers. Andrew.

Anderson makes many drum shell suitable for telescopes. I used them successfully here

Hi Scott, Great looking dob. How is the balance with the shell secondary? I am thinking of using an old bass drum shell for a 17.5" scope.

The balance is higher than some, but I like that anyway so that it stays balanced without springs at all altitude angles. The plywood ring that the truss poles attach to provides additional stiffness. In the end I chose to use a 4-vane spider instead of 3 because it was much stiffer with my somewhat thin, flexible drum cage. Basically, I love the drum shells and I'm quite surprised they aren't more popular among ATM's. I guess Dobson's theology has warped everyone's mind to the point that anything but cardboard or paper is viewed as antithetical.

If you leave the snares on you may be able to get a new sound out of your scope!
