Carton 100mm F/13 test setup tonight. new
      #2999200 - 03/22/09 11:38 PM Attachment (70 downloads)

hi all i worked on new mead mount till dark then
i put this test tube together after dinner tonight.
cost about 10.00.
i did Sirius, saturn, and Orion nebula.
views were very good for no paint inside of tube.
i could not do star test as i could not get circles
in focus.
i need to take another 2" off tube length.
i cut tube to 40" and i think i need around 37.75 inches.
anyway i used a 4mm on saturn and view was very good.
i used unitron 4" focuser, 4" PVC and 1 4" collar.
i mounted focuser to a 4" to 3" reducer collar.
it was a tight fit in unitron cradle as i had to put slightly longer bolts un to secure.
total build time was about 2 hours.
her are some pictures as usual.

Whats the Diameter of the Cell? 4"? Is it a surplus shed cell? Where did you get the cell?

Very nice project.

hey dd,
cell is 4" carton f/13 that i bought on AM about 9 months ago.
Carton Was Known For very fine optics and this one did not
disappoint.
was going to cut extra unitron tube till i found the jaegers 4" f/15 cell.
now i need to get some aluminum tubing for this one.
i will cut it down a little more today and test it tonight
weather permitting.

Brian,

Your set up looks good. My tube is 41 1/4"long. I guess length difference is because the Unitron focuser must be longer than the Carton. I still haven't use my scope yet. Only because the tube and dew shield still need to be painted, though they are already stripped. I've got the all the parts, lens/cell, focuser, finder, etc., in individual plastic zip lock bags right now. I can't wait to use it. I was able to do an artificial star test when I first got it though, and this lens looks like it might be the best I've ever had. I'm afraid that if I don't move on painting the tube soon, I'll lose interest.

ill wait a few hours before i call it a night.
i just bought a 4" orion focuser from s&s here and i hope its not going to be too short.
this focuser has to back on my jaegertron.
post some pictures when you get it finished.

Brian,

Is the PVC tube just for trial? Are you looking for aluminium tube for final ota? You are changing to Orion focuser because the Unitron is too long?

In any case, you are in a position to improve upon the original Carton tube. The tube is only 4 1/4" dia. Also, has only two baffles. It's an odd size for tube diameter, which requires odd sized rings if you don't already have them. Vixen 4" refractors always had 4 1/2" wide tube with three baffles, really well placed, for only f/10. Of course, your tube dimension will be determined by the diameter of your focuser flange and cell.

Definitely, the baffling is one thing I'd change if I could. I really think these things make a difference in contrast. For instance, Carton lens doesn't have edge blackening either. I blackened the edges of one of my lenses once and it did make a difference. Another point, Carton focuser, as great as it is, has only one light baffle.

Brian,

Another question, what are you mounting scope on? The mount in the photo? I'm planning on SP. I think this is barely sufficient, only because of the tube length. I believe in over mounting a scope. Of course, proper balancing of ota, smooth focuser, and motors (if eq) all help. I've heard of people using Burgess 127 on an SP and claiming that it's "rock solid". Hmmmm?

avatar,
i finally got out at 3am for a startest and lens has nice concentric circles in and out of focus.
much better with inside tube painted black.
i will mount this on a SP or CG5 with solid one piece tripod
legs.
i might invest in a nice 2 speed focuser for this.
i think its going to stay like this with a orion focuser
for a little while.
i might press fit a baffle or 2 for now.
i have other projects going and when i get to this one i will put cell on a aluminum tube.
would the vixen tube be to short.
i think ill get tube first then make all my parts fit the tube
even if i have to make some parts.(sleeve's and baffles)
ill keep my eye out for parts in the meantime.
this is a very nice 4" lens.

Brian,

Wow, you are working fast. I wish I could be that motivated. Nice to hear that the star test was real good. That's a sigh of relief. The Vixen 4 1/2" tubes, assuming the typical f/9.8 , will definitey be too short. BTW, Vixen did apparently make a "Pulsar", 4" f/13 long ago, though marketed only in Europe I think. I've never installed baffles but I know that you work with a light cone diagram. In theory anyway, seems relatively easy in a brand new aluminium tube. I'd put in at least two, makes a difference.

That's a good looking tube!
I really go for functional.

I remember an ad on ebay a few months ago for a Carton 100mm f 13.
I was going to buy it if I could find the cash.
The rest, as they say, is history....
