I have a CGEM mount and was thinking of getting the celestron cn16 gps for the mount. A skyscout and connect adapter is just a bit more. How does the skyscout gps compare to the gps of the cn16? how long does a lock take?

I have a 16 GPS for sale in the classifieds in the mount accesories for $125. It works very well when I used it on the CG-5. I have the skyscout. It works well. I have seen photographs of using it on the legs of the tripod but you have to be careful of the legs of the tripod as it can throw it off regarding the calibration. These are 2 different istruments. The GPS16 saves you from entering your location coordinates. the skyscout works well pointing and identifying a star/planets. No so well for finding star you want to locate but not terrible either. You can have both.

Is the CG-5 unit the same as the one for the CGEM? They sell several different CN16's. I may want to go with the skyscout as it can do the gps as well as it's normal operation. The question is how well does it work as a CN16 replacement?

There are some previous posts about this. The only thing I remember was about interference as the Skyscout doesn't like interference from metals nearby which cause a problem.

I've been using the SkyScout as a GPS on a CG5. If my main interest was a GPS lock, I would probably go with a dedicated GPS instead. The SkyScout serves this function just fine but it eats batteries. Moreover, I'm not sure what to do with the SkyScout after it connections (no easy way to connect it to the tripod). It seems to take a while to connect (a few minutes at best). This may be the case with other GPS devices as well. Still, it seems quite slow to connect.
I enjoy having the SkyScout independent of the GPS function. However, I increasingly find that I use the SkyScout to connect and then no longer use it with the mount. So, if ALL I wanted was a GPS link, I would probably go a different route. My two cents FWIW.

They cause problems with pointing accuracy--for shore--but not with it getting a fix. If all you wanna do is use it as a GPS with the scope, no problemo.
