Rare Meade 4" f/15 Photo-Equatorial on AstroMart new [Re: Glassthrower]
      #3399464 - 10/20/09 02:16 AM

There is currently an ad posted on AstroMart for a very rare equatorial mounting from a Meade 4-inch f/15 Photo-Equatorial refractor as sold during the late 1970s. It can be viewed at:

http://www.astromart.com/classifieds/details.asp?classified_id=651406

There aren't too many of these around. They were made in Japan by the same company that provided Unitron with its scopes. However, the Meade version was superior to the comparable #152 or #160 equatorial models.

That RV-6 looks pretty complete and in nice shape. I'd take it for that price. I have 2 of these and the optics are usually outstanding as most of us know.

Vintage Japan Manon? new [Re: mikey cee]
      #3399836 - 10/20/09 10:03 AM

Being a bit "green" to the whole classic scope scene, I don't know if this is a find or not - vintage Japan Manon? Since the shipping would be a killer for me, maybe someone closer to the Northwest would get a better shipping deal on it, or better yet, pick it up. Not much detail in the description, and the photos don't show much either, but it's listed as being in gently used condition.

That's definitely a 6" (or possibly an 8", if that dude is really big!). Too bad the pics aren't better. Looks like it might be a Springfield mount.

If I were close, I'd definitely check it out (I'm something of a Springfield nutjob)

Anybody live close enough to check it out for me? If it is a Springfield, at that price I'd be happy to compensate a CNer for their time and shipping, pending better pics.

PM me, if so. I'll ask the seller for better pics.

-Tim.

I haven't gotten a reply from the seller, so he must not be interested in talking to someone all the way from Los Angeles!

John, If you look at the ad, you'll see that it is not me but a fellow from AZ. I would NEVER PART OUT my Meade. I'd be happy to rescue and put it back together however.

Jae:

This is a rare scope and you are one of the few owners known. I cannot understand why someone would elect to do this--one amateur astronomer from Seattle has had repeated offers of over $4,500 for his complete Meade 4-inch telescope, but he won't sell the coveted instrument at any price.

The seller from Arizona probably intends to remount the optical tube assembly on something lighter for more portability. Frankly, if I was the owner of this rare Meade 4-inch #420 Equatorial it WOULD NEVER GET PARTED OUT.

Looks like a super C8+, so Byers drive.

Why don't those happen to me!?

Actually, there's one of these locally too, but the pics and ad don't mention the tripod or wedge. it does have a Parks binoviewer, though. But at $550, it's pretty much retail.

I wasn't sure I should post this, because from the pics it looks to be in pretty rough shape, with a broken or missing tube ring and focus knob.

Oh dear Lord... I don't think any classic telescope ad will ever top this Cassegrain. Good luck to any locals.
