NGC 5146 "Cocoon"
      #3401133 - 10/20/09 09:49 PM Attachment (15 downloads)

This was a quick test for the Canon XS with an Astronomik CLS clip-on filter. Details were:

> Five (5) captures, 5-min each plus two (2) darks
> Scope was AT66 at f6 (no flattener)
> Mount was EQ-G, guided via PDH with C5 at f10.
> Processed with DSS and Corel's PaintShopPro X

This was 1st time with 5-min caps that were not overcome with light pollution; thus, the CLS filter did its job! The nebular [Ha wavelenght] area was also well highlighted!

Others have commented on a slight bluish tint produced by the CLS filter. I am not sure it is evident in my image - perhaps the auto white balance setting in DSS is doing a good job with overall tones?

Results look good; thus, I am encouraged to repeat the exercise with the usual 20-30 caps.

Victor

I agree this combo worked very well for you , the star field looks very good and the dust lane stands out well as well as the nebula itself.

This will look great with more subs and more darks but thats always true , very nice Victor.

It sure looks like the filter helped to get the Ha data.
Good image.

Erik, Lawrie,
Thanks for the comments.

I was pleasantly surprised when the nebula colors were visible in the RAW caps! The filter looks like a keeper.
