M33--Popular this time of year
      #3401149 - 10/20/09 09:57 PM Attachment (31 downloads)

Can't get rid of the $#@*& gradient and Gradient Xterminator isn't compatible with PS7. Believe me, it was a lot worse when I started.

30 x 240s at ISO1600
20 darks
30 flats (for what they were worth)
C8 at 1260mm fl on a CGEM

Suggestions and critiques always welcome

John

You have good detail and the stars look good , aside from the gradient thing I cant see much else , maybe the color is a little flat and could use a boost.

I think you can still find a copy of PixinsightLE and update it which lets you use the DBE to fix gradients.

Erik--

You're right about the color. I tried to pump the saturation but it accentuated the blue cast in the upper left quadrant. Kind of a trade off. I'll need to revisit this later once I've given my eyes a rest. Fresh start and all that.

You can always post the Tiff someplace like Mediafire and I can run it through GradX for ya.

Nice data John !

I copied the JPEG off your post and did the following :

Lasso the blue corner, feather selection, crank down the levels in blue and green

Lasso the gradient on the left of the spiral, working carefully around the spiral arms. Feather, and used a curves adjustments to bring the black points input levels a little higher at the left side of the curve, while leaving the highlights the same level to keep the stars bright.
I then used the magic wand on the red blobs, feathered, and boosted the reds with curves adjust.

I then used Noels tools to do an increase star colors to make the star colors pop a bit.

I then did an overall Vibrancy and saturation boost by +20 to make the image colors pop out.

What do you think ?

Thanks for the taking the time on adjustments. I like the boost in saturation in the core. It was a valiant effort on the background gradient/color issues with some improvement.

Another idea, download a CCDstack trial and use the tools in it to fix the gradient... at least for 30 days : )

Ok here is the file with just a GradientX run on it with balance background turned on.

I also took the same file and went a bit farther with it with some curves and color boost in match color and then an inverse mask with noise ninja.

There both posted here on Mediafire again.

Great job on the adjustments. I appreciate the help eliminating the gradient. Gets me thinking about upgrading PS and picking up GradientX. Hope you don't mind but I've posted the adjusted file so everyone can see the differences.

John
