Image Posting - Mystery Solved!!!!! new
      #3399731 - 10/20/09 08:53 AM Attachment (24 downloads)

So I keep trying to post a photo of NGC7331 and Stephan's Quintet but everytime I post the attached photo appears to not exist. I know there is a size limit with respect to file size. I am under this 105kb limit. Is there also a dimension size limit? I have tried posting the jpg from my home PC and just now from my work PC. Is CN having some issues that would explain this? I had this problem once before but never did figure out what was causing the problem. Any insight or suggestions is welcomed.

I will try attaching the photo to this posting and please chime in with whether you can or cannot see the image.

Thank You,
Jason

I figured it out! There appears to be a limit to the length of the file name associated with the posted item. Hmmmm....... interesting. Anyone know the maximum number of characters allowed in a file name when posting?

Jason

I believe the Windows definition MAX_FILENAME_LEN is 255 characters. You should also get MAX_PATHNAME_LEN which is another 255 characters.

That must have been one long filename!

Hey David,

I was aware of the 255 character limit but my filename was not that long. The file name verbatum was, "NGC 7331 Best Yet Settings with Median Stack and Per Channel Background Calibration - Processed CN.jpg"

If I counted correctly this is only 98 characters not including the .jpg extension. Maybe there is a seperate limit for the hosting server. I am not too familiar with these sorts of things but I know when I renamed the file to "NGC7331 CN" the photo showed up. In any case it's interesting and not to big a deal as I was able to get it posted.

Thanks,
Jason

It may have been the spaces in the file name...try it with underscores and see if it takes it!

Very well processed , good detail in the core and the Quintet stands out well too.

Its the spaces in the file name - if the web server is hosted on a linux box then if the web scripts haven't specifically quoted the file name for you then it won't work. Have you noticed that everyone else uses underscores "_" in lieu of spaces

Spcaes ate traditionally used to donote the separation of parameters on command line - so Linux banns spaces in file name unless quotes are added around them and quoting is correctly carried through any script processing

But then again most URL processing will subs the space with "%20" - so it could be a bug with CN

Jason I really like the hue and colour stauration you getting out of your processing there. Especially the blue and red areas.

My 7331 came out much more subdued, wanna share your processing detail?
