Not exactly sure why I'm posting this photo up, but I felt it was somewhat significant. As far as I know, it's the only one out there. A few years back, I got to look through the 40" refractor at Yerkes (even for those who work there, it's not usually accessible), so I snapped a quick pic of Jupiter through the EP. Lots of CA, I know.

I expected a lot better ! But then again it's only one frame, no Avi taken I believe.

Lol, no, not at all. Actually I was helping with the tour group, so I just kind of popped my Canon A80 in the EP in between viewers.
That is, however, more or less what it looked like through that scope. The seeing was terrible, but you can imagine how long a 100 foot tube with a huge lens takes to cool down.

You're right, that is terrible
But, it is through a 40" scope. Not many people can say they got to look through one, let alone grab an image.

Martin, how is the view throught the telescope? Of course I assume we can't expect much because of Jupiter's so low on the sky.
I was there watching M5, Jul 03 last year.

The CA is not *that* bad for an antique refractor (not counting the fuzzyness of the view overall). A couple of years ago I saw Jupiter through a 20" Brasheer(sp?) refractor at the Chabot Space & Science Center (see pic)
The chromatic aberration on Jupiter was MUCH worse than in your image from Yerkes. And half the aperture too.

Deffinately the best part of that tour was looking through a 40

Indeed... I can imagine that it would be so much better on globular clusters (as that is Dr. Cudworth's field of research anyways), we just had to view something bright. Lots of atmospheric blurring (humid august night) and CA. But hey, it's still a 40". Though when properly cooled (which doesn't take long), the 24" gave a much crisper view.

I read a story by Timothy Ferris about his experience with the 24" Clark refractor at Lowell observatory. He was observing Saturn and experienced a lot of aberrations. He then removered the modern EP and adapter and installed one of the original EPs that Clark made for that scope. Most of the aberrations vanished leaving a sharp planetary image.

It's not CA, it's mainly atmospheric refraction
