Adhesive backed PTFE in Tube Rings
      #3402118 - 10/21/09 12:50 PM

Have any of you used something like this stuff ( Adhesive backed PTFE ) to replace the felt-like material often used to line tube rings? I'd be curious to see what you thought of the results.

I've done this on a few scopes that I've owned. I used UHMW and added a Wilcox ring for tube rotation on a Dob and EQ mounted Newt. Worked very well for me. McMaster Carr has the stuff in different thickness and widths. They sell a nice large diameter hose clamp and tubing for the ring too.

UHMW... thats a new one on me. Looked it up, and it does look very promising.

I have a third tube ring to serve the purpose of a Wilcox ring (a friend and I split a set for this purpose shortly before Erik published the idea). I've gotten along well enough with the "felt" in the rings, but it has been slowly breaking down and now is beginning to scuff the OTA.

Appreciate hearing about this other option.

Finally got around to cleaning the felt and its adhesive off the rings, and replaced the felt with a tape made of the UHMW material recommended by Tim. The OTA rotates quite a bit more smoothly with this stuff than it did with the original felt. So far, so good.

What's a "Wilcox Ring"?

Tom,
Did you get the tape from McMaster-Carr? If so do you have their part number? I am looking at item # 7344A41 0.022" thick by 1" wide. UHMW Polyethylene Tape with Super-Bond Adhesive.

thanks

Don

That's what I ordered from them. It ended up being almost exactly the same thickeness as the original felt. It was easily cut with an ordinary pair of scissors and was no problem to apply.

I'd be curious about any impact in settling time after the scope gets bumped. Does the felt absorb vibration any better than the plastic pads?

Not that I noticed from one time out. The only change I could detect was a decrease in resistance to movement when I rotated the OTA - which is of course what I was after. Vibration settling time seemed unchanged, as far as I could tell (I certainly didn't experience an "Uh, oh!" moment in that regard) but to be honest it did not occur to me to actually check for a difference.
