Well I've made the decision to start restoring the 20TE. While getting things ready I decided to do a comparison of the two mounts. I used a medical scale for precise weighing. Nothings too good for this bunch....accuracy and all. The 10TE type equatorial tipped in at 12.25 lbs. dripping wet. The contender the 20TE equatorial rang in at a whopping 43.0 lbs. There really is not much to restore on the mount. Just a little touch up using an artist's brush and some black gloss enamel. Most of it is those dinky bare edge and corner things...you know. The OTA has too many scratches and minor dings from botched attempts trying to mount it in the saddle. I'm having the tube weight rods the threaded CW rod and the drawtubes replated. That large focuser tube is a full 1/16th inch thick ...talk about robust. Mike

Final picture is a size comparison. The 4.25" is the one on the right. Mike

Well today I took all of my goodies to the plating shop. Tonight I'll get out my palm sander and start refinishing those white steel counter weights. They each weigh 10.5 pounds. Purchased paint last night but won't start on much till warmer and drier weather. Mike

Hey Mike!
I'm REALLY glad you posted the two mounts side by side. From the solitary picture of the 20TE I never would have thought the mount was that "beefy."
This is a great thread! I'm a gonna keep watching!

Hello Mike,
thank you very much for your comparison of the mounts. It's very nice to see this 2oTE mount in detail. In the hole setup picture, it allways looks a bit small under the big 20TE OTA, but from this View it is a very elegant mount ! Have you ever measured the diameter of the axles ?

A pair of beautiful imported vintage mountings shown side-by-side! (I think that your photo of the Tasco #10TE is actually one of a mounting head from a Sears 76.2mm #6339-A Discoverer.)
The two designs are very similar--I own several examples of both styles (Sears and Tasco) but much prefer the one shown. As you and our other members are aware, both of the mounting heads for Tasco's #10TE (R-74) and the Sears #6339-A were made in Japan by Royal Astro.

John....I was aware that this wasn't a "true" 10TE head. Those don't have the exposed DEC axle. I merely used the 10TE language in overriding any cosmetic differences to grab most reader's attention and create a more creative approach to my title. Mike

Hey Mike,
I measured my 15TEA head at it comes in at 11 pounds. But, measured on a bathroom scale.
