Nice (Rare) Session with Binos Last Night
      #3402756 - 10/21/09 05:51 PM

I took my Garrett 10x50s (attached to my Sky Window) and a chair out last night & spent a little over an hour cruising the sky last night. It was really nice not having to worry about finding/switching eyepieces, tracking the target by re-adjusting the field of view of my Dob every 30 seconds or so, etc. It also reminded me that viewing with binos for some areas of the sky is better than the rather confining FOV of telescope for the same area. Getting back to basics is pretty awesome after all.

Clay...

Nice observing report. Thanks for comparing binoculars to scope observing. In this forum, I think most of us feel the same as you do about binoculars.

Binoculars are great, no doubt about it. But it's a little funny to talk about not having to worry about switching eyepieces. After all, there's no law saying that you can't just stick your lowest power eyepiece into the Dob and use it all night!

Odd how having the choice of switching eyepieces taken away gives a greater sense of freedom.

I've sometimes wondered about welding a low-power eyepiece into the focuser of my small refractor. Then I'd end up with something very much like binoculars. Pros: 90-degree viewing angle, better optics, and far better focuser. Cons: 90-degree viewing angle and only able to use one eye.

First and foremost observing love: naked eye.
Second, binoculars.
Last but not least, telescopes.
And I sometimes dabble with cameras.

Ain't it the truth, Tony! One can expand this paradox to the overall equipment choices available. I keep threatening to cut WAY back on my astro gear to further purify my observing experience, but haven't quite been able to yet...
