I have the option of getting this green laser pointer from my coworkers as my birthday present. I went to a Radio Shack store to see it .It's very heavy and seems to be well constructed. One cool thing is that I get a 3 months warranty on this item. Does anybody have used one of this for Astronomy purposes? Should I go for another brand? It has some good reviews on the RS site.

I have 2 GLP's. They are different name brands (Meade and Celestron but they look exactly like the Radio Shack GLP. Both of mine had to be sent back for replacement so a warranty is a necesity! Astronomics sells one for $30 if they are still on sale but you might have to pay shipping. Don T.

I know lots of people trash the inexpensive GLP's, but FWIW I got 3 cheap GLP's on ebay for about $6 each, including shipping. I have only used one of them, since the other two are for gift purposes, but I haven't had any problems with it yet. It produces a nice fine green line that stretches all the way to Jupiter, so it works just fine for me. My opinion may change if it dies on me, but it is clearly worth my $6.

I've purchased 4 of the cheap ones from geeks.com when they were on sale for $13.99 One was inop and replaced quickly by them. One other one failed but it was because it got run over by a car so I guess that failure is justified. I have noticed that among the cheap ones, beam intensity varies wildly and they don't usually like the cold.

The Jasper pointer seen here is the same cost but usually in the fall of each year they drop the price as a promotion. Just another option.

mmmmm thanks guys, I think I am getting one of the expensive ones. If I buy it on-line I need it to be fully functional because returning stuff for me to USA is not the best option.

If you want to spend money hotech makes the 3 in one for $85. Green laser, white LED and Red LED flash light with variable brightness levels on the Red LED aspect. A nifty tool if you have money burning a hole in your pocket and constructed very well.

I have the Hotech G3 and love it. A bit more expensive than the other options but has good battery life, three levels of red light intensity and is very well made. The green laser is also very powerful and easy to see.

While not something I would consider as a giveaway (pocket depth comes into play here) my choice is one of these:

Mine has functioned without failure for a couple of years, now. I use his collimators to great success, as well.
