I like it....but what did I shoot?
      #3403668 - 10/22/09 03:57 AM Attachment (53 downloads)

Hi Folks. I shot this about a month ago somewhere between Cygnus and Cepheus I believe. The target was listed in Cartes du Ciel as an open cluster, with a description that said something like "cluster and neb, within a circle of stars." I liked the description and started shooting it, but never wrote down what it was. I've spent more than an hour or two clicking around Cartes du Ciel trying to find it again, but I can't see it anywhere.

So I'm asking if anyone can give a bit of help identifying it.

I do have the image stats, which are 32 minutes of 2 minute subs with the Canon XTi @ iso800 through the EON 72mm @ f4.8, piggybacked on the CPC925 on a Mitty wedge.

Here's a link to a big version with all the surrounds:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3503/4033608637_bf23c47404_o.jpg

and the small version for here. Thanks for any feedback.

and here's a 100% crop of the tiny cluster within the circle of stars.

I have no clue, Nick, but because of the red nebulosity, you may have one of the Sharpless objects. I'd take note of the position you were shooting and look in the Sharpless catalog for what sits there. Just a shot in the dark, as it were. Oh yea, the image looks good, too.

If I recollect correctly, there is a group on Flickr that can take your image and give you the coordinates, and objects included in the image... that should make identifying a bit easier.

Once you find the group that is...

Hey Nick,

Thats a nice shot you have there. I know for sure that the emission nebula is IC1311 in Cygnus as I have observed and imaged this before. I am not 100 percent certain of a catalog number for the cluster but the brighter star in the ring around it is HD 191944. Its a magnitude 6.96 star at about 117 parsecs distant. I will take a look at my Sky Atlas when I get home and my copy of the Sky 6 to see if it shows up with a name. Also the location of the star is 20h 10' 44.3" and +41Degrees 14' 49.3".

Good luck,
Jason

FYI - If you arent aware of this online star map check it out. I love this thing and its a great tool to plan for imaging sessions. http://www.sky-map.org/?ra=20.181101354467856&de=41.4281207015867&zoom=7&show_grid=1&show_constellation_lines=1&show_constellation_boundaries=1&show_const_names=0&show_galaxies=1&img_source=DSS2

Nice ident - good job you weren't thrown by the "some where between Cygnus and Cepheus" as its smack in the middle of Cygnus

I use sky-map.org too - anyone notice if you make this particular field wider there are two dirty great aircraft induced tramlines bisecting the vista - you would have thought that imaging at the end of a runway would be a problem

Indeed. SkyAtlas2000 shows same nebular mass and star pattern.

Nick, if you enter IC1311 in CDC you'll get the coordinates.

Very nice shot , the dim glob in the ring of stars is cool.

The group that Gary is talking about is the Astrometry group on Flickr , just submit and image and they identify most stuff in it.

Thanks for the great info. Interesting that IC 1311 shows up on searches as both a cluster and nebula. I've also now read that the core of the cluster is the little knot of stars within the circle. I checked in CDC and the description is a bit off from what i remember reading and shooting...but I think I might now be mixing up the description with something else. I really need to keep a journal.

Great link too Jason. I didn't have it before, so thanks.

Keep a journal!!!!!! I do and I've been able to go back and shoot star fields for some of my old comet shots. Otherwise (given that comets go all over the place) I would never find the fields again

Yes I'll second the comment about a journal ... my memory is never good enough. Mine (when I'm smart enough to remember to use it) has even helped me diagnose imaging problems time and time again.

Low tech - spiral pad and something to write with on a string
Hi tech - one of those digital voice activated recorders, they are much cheaper now than just a few years ago and are very convenient. I even know a guy who pins a lapel mic on himself, the recorder goes into his pocket for all of his observing and imaging sessions. Taking verbal notes about even just visual stuff really enhances the experience and is invaluable you're updating a written log or sketching.
