This individual probably expired because of too much to do and too little time in the day to do it. Maybe a spouse has to deal with this....who knows.  Mike

I looked up the address for the estate sale in google maps, and there doesn't appear to be an observatory at that location, at least. And no results for searching for Palo Alto Hills in Oregon, either.

Those binocs are nice. Fork mount for them is great also. Notice that the cas has what looks like an old Celestron computerized finder mounted on the back?

...would a 24" really fit in a garage? Pretty compact, if the aperture is that big. Maybe the tube is 24" OD?

That's because Palo Alto Hills is in San Francisco.
Plug the following (from the telescope plaque) into Google Maps:
+37° 33' 41", -122° 10' 07" (Palo Alto Hills Observatory)
and it puts you right into San Francisco bay. Scoot just down and left, and you'll see Palo Alto hills. Nothing obvious to indicate where in that (now very wealthy) area this telescope might have once lived.

That certainly makes more sense. I know a Model A restorer in that area. Very nice hilly area. Might be dark enough to see the Milky way, but I wasn't there after dark.

Oh man I wish I was still in Milwaukee. I would take a weekend to go get those two scopes. At that price they are a steal and a half... I loved the RV6 I had and want another one. Unfortunately they don't seem to come up to often in the area of the country I am in.

I know this scope. It is indeed a homebuilt and the fork was an older searchlight mount. The gentleman who built it was an old world German craftsman. At one time he had a diamond turning machine in his garage. Originally it was located in the Palo Alto hills in the San Francisco area. Very nice instrument but totally custom with no documentation. Truely a "one off". Very massive. A unique feature was the magnetic "clutches" on each axis. On the rear cell ring handle there are many pushbuttons. When pressed the " clutches" released and let you guide the scope to a new object. When you released the button the clutches locked and the drive took over.
