I agree,that D700 has blown my mind...
Your images are so impressive.Your processsing is beautiful!
I am curious about one thing with the D700...if you dont mind?
Does the D700 have the option to save without any compression?or do you have to use "Mode 3" to work around it?Also, is it controllable by way of just the USB cable?i.e. does SW have the ability to automate your sessions..or do you need to start and stop each exposure with an IR remote?

Sorry for the questions, but I am looking for a really good performing DSLR,and this D700 of yours is really making me rethink going back to Canon...

Cheers!

Hi again and thanks for your comments :-)

Brent: I haven't tried controlling the camera over USB. I guess it should be possible with MaxIm or other software - just a guess since I do not have such software. I'm just using a timer remote where I put the exposure time together with the number of images I want to capture.
Regarding the mode 3 fix. I haven't actually checked if the D700 still have the star eater syndrome. I shoot using the "uncompressed raw" option. Since the raw pictures looks good to me I haven't tried doing a mode 3 picture for a side by side comparison. I heard that Nikon is clipping the raw blacks slightly, but I don't know for sure. I have newer tried a Canon, but had both the D300 and D700, and both models has served me very well. I can fully recommend to give the Nikons a try. Just check if MaxIm and other programs starts to support the Nikons.

Thanks again for your comments.

Brent/Heine

I don't know about Maxim (I use Mac), but you can automate captures with the D700 using Stark Lab's DSLR Shutter (free, thanks Craig!) paired with ShoeString Astronomy's DSUSB adapter. You can't shoot with mirror up enabled when shooting with long exposure noise reduction on (you can when shooting without NR on), and images are not downloaded, but stored onto the CF card (the cable, which connects the laptop's USB to the camera's remote shutter port, only triggers the exposure). I find it works very well.
