Skyscout questions
      #3405814 - 10/23/09 09:17 AM

I bought a skyscout recently and it seems to take forever to startup and 80% of the time it takes several tries to get a gps lock (which it eventually does). Is this normal? Also If I put the expansion carg into the unit and then boot it up it locks up on the boot screen and I must take the batteries out to reset the device as it wont reset by power button. Is this normal? Are you only suposed to put the cards in when its running?

Hi Chet, Welcome to Cloudy Nights! Glad to have you join the forums!

I'm moving your question about Skyscout, to the dedicated forum for Skyscouts, for better assistance.

I can't answer your questions about the expansion disks as we don't have any. However, the GPS lock can take moments to several minutes to occur. Just like a car GPS, the more often you use it, the quicker it can locate a signal.

Ours took longer to locate the first time out and then every time we take it to a different location than the last time it was used. However, I've never had it take over 5 minutes to locate a satellite. I have noticed that the batteries that were included with the Skyscout don't last very long and it tends to act a little crazy when the batteries get low.

If you're problems lie outside of what I've described, I would suggest you contact Celestron as there could be something else going on.

Hi !

I have no problem with the expansions cards.

I first put one of them without getting block; then, I've switch on and off a lot of times and never had to reset the device (nor taking out the batteries).

If it's new, I should try to talk with the vendor and have another unit.
If it is not new, perhaps an update should solve the problem (but I don't know... )

Have heard about lock-ups before just like the one you described and the owner just returned it to get a new one. (Mine has no problem about freezing/locking up with the memory cards in place, nor in GPS acquisition which is always right on the money).

Check out this thread.

Hope this helps.

Best,
