Field Curvature and Roofs
      #3405850 - 10/23/09 09:41 AM

I've noticed in a Nikon Monarch 8x42, field curvature is much worse moving from the center to the top of the field, compared to center to the bottom of the field. But, there is the same amount of field curvature on the sides. Is this typical of roof prisms, or a characteristic of the Nikons?

Is there a relationship between amount of field curvature and eye relief? It seems like binoculars with less eye relief seem to have improved field curvature. But maybe this is coincidental in models that I've looked looked through.

I would say what you have found here is an imbalance in the image, not unusual to find, but not something that would be consistent from one sample to another. I've mapped inconsistencies in image at all points around the clock.

No. That's coincidental. here are examples of very low curvature with long eye relief
Pentax 20x60
Pentax 16x60
Nikon 12x50 SE
Fujinon 10x50
Zen Ray Summit 10x42 roof
Celestron Regal 8x42 roof
Nikon SE 8x32
Nikon ProStar 7x50

Thanks EdZ. I exchanged the Nikon 8x42 binoculars for the sample model, and in the new one the field curvature is well balanced.
