Sky cleared this afternoon but not for long!
There is complex activity in the northern equatorial region to the east of the meridian, with several areas of plage visible in both CaK and Ha. A small spot associated with one of these is visible in white light but I was unable to image it convincingly due to poor seeing.
An area of plage to the south of the spot appears to be a developing spot group: but, from its latitude, it may be a remnant of the old cycle!
2009 Oct 23, 1347 UT. Solarscope 60 @ f/16. Seeing poor to bad, transparency mediocre.
Some minor prominences were seen but nothing notable; poor transparency may have hidden extensive but faint activity.

2009 Oct 23, 1327 UT. PST CaK @ f/20. Note the spots which are associated with the active area which shows up as a "bar magnet" in Ha.

Nope, the polarity orientation is the same as that for the current sunspot cycle, so it is new-cycle activity. Spot activity will start to now expand into a broad band of latitudes rather than just a few spots at higher solar latitudes as was seen at the start of the current cycle. Clear skies to you.

Thanks for putting me right. I was judging by my guesstimate of the latitude; I don't think I have a means of measuring the magnetic polarity.
