Could someone explain what is meant by validation?
Z And for example seems to have a variety of prevalidated observations. Thanks

Well I don't know about "unknown" but V, B, R & I are photoelectric / CCD measures using filters. V approximates to visual but the others can be very different, as the graph shows ... the extra brightness in the I band (infra red) and R band (red) and the lower brightness in the B band (blue) shows that the star is a cool object; the reducing spread recently shows that the star has become hotter (bluer) as the outburst occurs.

At one time when the AAVSO received data it was validated by a person who looked at the data and compared it to previous data. If the data was within a reasonable range it was then validated. I did notice that data I submitted was validated within a few days.
About a year ago my data was showing as prevalidated right after being submitted. The data is now check for proper entry of the data fields (chart #, comp star, etc) for gross errors and marked Previladated. Here and here are links the AAVSO validation process.

So if this is an interacting binary system, it's really 2 stars I'm looking at when I make an observation. I'm starting to see that Mira variables are red. I hope I get another look at this one before winter hits.
