Yup! Saw that one on 4/25/2009. I just looked it up in my notes. I wrote about it as being rather diffuse, but showed brightening toward the central core using my 24 pan and LB12.

Use the geometric method if you've got a Telrad. I do remember that it was easier to find because the Dipper was so high during that time of the year.

As far as M74 goes, I think we need to be waiting on that one. It is listed as visual magnitude 6 (the only object with 6 visual magnitude) in the Messier Marathon book. I've tried so many times in light polluted skies and am giving up until I have a better opportunity to observe it. I can't imagine trying to observe this on Marathon night.

Skies have cleared here, CSC predicts transparency at 5/5 (rare here), so I'll give it another go after the moon gets low enough tonight. I'll try to "warm up" with M110 again before attempting one...more...time!

Well, at least until after the full moon!

Mag 6 ! ? The info that I have lists that object at a Mag 9.4 .
