CGE with C14 and FSQ106 - possible for AP? new
      #3392341 - 10/16/09 02:55 AM

Hi,

I currently have a CGE with a C14 on it and I'm thinking of buying an FSQ106 for wide-field imaging.

Do you think it will be too much for the CGE mount to handle if I put the FSQ on the mount together with the C14 and then use the FSQ for imaging and the C14 as guidescope? I will be using a QHY8 for imaging through the FSQ.

Kind regards,

Helge

It wouldn't work well for imaging. I'd look to the CGE Pro for that amount of load.

I would get a plate to use the FSQ with the 102mm you have as a guidescope.
Then it would be great for widefield and easier to transport and set-up.

Ok - thanks. I guess I will just have to continue switching between the scopes then.

I do have a C14 together (side-by-side) with a WO80FD, on CGE. Great for visual observing (REALLY great), but not for imaging. Vibration stops after 2 sec, but this is not good enough for imaging.

Consider flexing as well - the C14 OTA is quit heavy, and this may result in flexing of mounting parts.

Yes I think there are quite a few people that have a C14 on a CGE for imaging but that scope alone is probably pushing it for the CGE for Astro Photography.

I think the CGE has a capacity of 60 pounds? Even the AP 900 with a capacity of 70 lbs is not recommended for AstroPhotography with the C14 on top of it.

Ugh... I keep wanting to buy a C14, and I actually have the opportunity to do so, but the CGE seems to be the weak link. Vibration nonwithstanding, even the PEC is terrible with the C11... I'm sure the C14 would introduce more problems. I still want one though, wish I'd had gotten the G11 (heard the gears were better, less vibrations).

Well, I may be one of the few that don't agree that the CGE14 can't be used for imaging, at least with a FR, but maybe my standards are low.
Anyway, I used this combo for more than half a year without using it for imaging since I read everywhere that it was pushing it for visual use only . Then I decided to try it with my Canon EOS 450, and surely it's no Paramount or AP, but I wouldn't say that it's useless.
Here are my 2 attempts at NGC4565 amd M64 with a CGE14 with a 0.63 focal reducer, haven't tried at full focal length yet:

These pictures won't win any prices, but I think they show that the CGE is usable for imaging if you don't request Paramount pictures.

I'm working on a swap for a CGE. When the smoke settles, I'll stick the C14 and FSQ on it just to see how it feels. I've been hesitant to try that combo at F/11 even on the NJP so I'm not optimistic about the CGE. I don't think I'd be afraid to try to try it with the C14 alone (or perhaps with a lighter second telescope) at F/7 or less, though.

Reading the question a little more carefully (should have done that from the start), I realize that it's quite a heavy scope that you would like to use with the C14.

I use a light 4.5" Starblast reflector as a guidescope and the FSQ106 is a lot heavier. Still, if you buy it, I think you should try it, at least with a focal reducer.
What makes me optimistic is that I don't find my CGE14 to be very sensitive to balance when I image, so there should be room for some more weight on the mount.

As I can see in your signature line that you have a couple of other refractors, you could try one of these with the C14 first to see how it performs.
What has kept me from trying the full focal length is that my guidescope has a very short focal length, in the same region as the FSQ106. I have tried imaging with a guidescope that had a focal length about 1/8 of the main scope, but I had to throw away some pictures. By just going to 1/6 in focal ratio it worked a lot better. Maybe a barlow can be useful though.
