Had the clearest, darkest sky in many months a few nights ago and it turned into a Murphy's law night. I kept getting "star not moving enough" in PHD when I tried M27 in the 127EDT guiding with the 80ED. I gave up and set the timer for two hours of 90 second unguided exposures, with over half of them having to be thrown out. Then before packing it in I realized the cable from the mount to the SSAG had come loose and that's why I got the "star not moving" error message. I think Craig needs to add a sub message, " Check your connections Stupid!" With M27 now too close to the trees I decided to try NGC 7000, shooting with the 80 and guiding with the 127. PHD quickly calibrated my new guidestar. I never use the flattener with the 127 as it's field is flat almost to the edges to begin with. The Onyx however, starts giving linear stars a third of the way from each corner, and in my haste to salvage the night, I forgot to add the flattener.
Anyway, here's my own personal best North America Nebula,
22 X 300 sec, 20 darks, 15 flats(shot using white T shirt at blue screen, flat screen TV), 15 bias frames, Stacked in DSS, processed in CS4, (just started using it, I'll never use Elements again now) Onyx, 500mm F/6.25 Canon 40D unmoddified, 800 ISO, no CLS filter (too much red noise banding)subject of a future post.

Thanks Sal, having upgraded to CS4 from PS Elements made a bigger difference than I thought in the processing aspect. Now I just need to make a checklist to make sure all my equipment is connected and functioning!

Excellent shot - it looks like your 80mm scope is better than mine without the flattener.

I agree with my ED80 and no flattener this would be a throw away shot but this looks really good and I wouldnt even have noticed.
That Onyx is a nice scope , keep up the good work.

Thanks Erik and Bryan. The Onyx is a sharp little scope. Had I posted a larger image the linear stars would have been more evident.
