Denkmeier Power Switch Opinions?
      #3408516 - 10/24/09 04:29 PM

All,

What experiences have users had with the Denkmeier SCT power switch (S2) for Binoviewing? On the surface, it looks like a great idea allowing easy switching between 3 powers. Would save on the number of eyepiece sets you need, etc. Obviously, optical quality of the FR and multiplier are at issue, as well as the diagonal mirror. Are many people using these?

Thanks,
Rick

Rick,

I originally bought the PxS + Denk II package which I used on my Maxbright diagonal. The idea works but it the binoviewer gets to be a long way off axis so that stability is somewhat compromised.

I then picked up a R2 PxS diagonal. The Denk bv can mate directly with the diagonal which shortens the optical path somewhat. Recently, I added a filter switch module to this. It looks goofy but it is very effective and it's seldom out of my scope. When it's plugged into my SCT, I reach focus in all of the switch combinations.

The theory is that you will only need one or two pairs of eyepieces. In truth, I still ended up with several pairs. To me, the sensible choices were 30LE's, 22 Pans amd 16T5's. With the large range of possible magnification, these overlap nicely.

I've had the Denk II binoviewer with a power switch for a few months. It's used on an 8" SCT with a William Optics dielectric diagonal. I have 2 ep sets: Nagler 16 T5's and Pan 24's. Both sets are plenty for the ranges between the focal reducer and 2x magnification. I'll have to say that even though it gives great views and is superbly made, I like it best because it's easy and a whole lot of fun to use. Saturn and the moon are 3D.

It's kind of pricey, but you won't have to trade it for something better.

I don't like Barlows because I sense they diminish brightness and contrast, but I don't sense any of that with the Powerswitch diagonal. Using the multiplier and reducer is the same as switching between different f/l EPs. I don't rave about too many products, but this is one of them. You might require another lens(I forgot the name), available from Denk, to allow the reducer feature to work in your SCT. I don't use the reducer feature with my Mak, for just that reason(I have that special lens, btw), but just the multiplier alone is worth the price. Call Denk before you buy to discover how all three powers work with your scope.

I have the AP Maxbright diagonal and the TEC turret and the views through those diagonals are no different than through the Denk diagonal, so Denk's diagonal mirror is top notch.

I also have Denk's Powerswitch BV which I use with the AP Maxbright diagonal for the sake of simplicity. Using both powerswitches on the diagonal and BV will drive you nuts. I'm not smart enough to handle that many variations, not only that, but all that glass does diminish brightness and contrast.

I can vouch for the optical quality of the PowerX switch, I've had mine several years and it is simply outstanding. I use a pair of 11NagT6 for planets and at over 400X I see no aberations of any kind in the entire Denk II system. What I do see is a beautiful setailed image that seems twice as large as the same image with one eye. With the 24 Pans I have a range of six powers that don't overlap.
