I need to cover my mount!
      #3408740 - 10/24/09 06:47 PM

Hey all,
I just recently built a permanent pier and I want to keep my EQ-6 mounted on it for polar alignment purposes (Astro Imaging). I've been using visqueen, trash bags, t-shirts, cotton beach towels and what not to keep it dry, but I'm running into condensation(sweating)issues. I will eventually frame a observatory over it, but that will be some time later and I'm afraid I'll end up destroying an expensive mount if I don't do something soon. Does any body have solutions they would like to share?

Thank you,

Put a cover over it that doesn't touch the mount itself and is open at the bottom for ventilation. The cover will get wet, perhaps on the inside too, but the mount won't. An inverted plastic trashcan or similar can work well.

OK I took Luigi's advice and ran down to our local big box store and purchased not one, but two trash cans...

I have another question for you Guru's.

Should I drape some kind of material over the mount to help keep the moisture or dust off?

Thanks,

You might want to run an extension chord out to it and keep a small 20W light bulb burning. That is a really nice mount and certainly worth protecting.

Now how about cutting yourself a nice plywood ring to fit the top of the lower can for a nifty eyepiece holder.

I like the trash can solution. But it would probably be a good idea to cover the mount with a black plastic trashbag, tied securely around the bottom, just in case the upper trash can blows off.

I do plan to use bungie cords or something to hold both cans down, but I kind of got into watching some of todays games and enjoyed a few of my favorite beverages... I have a big rock on top of it for now.

Here is my "Rubbermaid Observatory AKA the Rubber Dome" completeted. 30hrs. of non-stop rain and no moisture to be found! I also have 1250 grams of desiccant on it's way, just in case...
