Bushnell Legend Ultra HD 8x or 10x? new
      #3409252 - 10/25/09 01:04 AM

Hi,

Am looking forward to buy my first pair of binos. Was wondering if the Bushnell Legend Ultra HD 8x would be a good buy, with its large 8 degree real fov, and reports of it being better than the nikon monarch in terms of light transmission.

The 10x too looks decent, however I am afraid that the exit pupil wld be too small (4.2mm) for astronomical usage. Anyone owns one of this?

The 8x also sells for a great price point on Amazon too, abt $220+

Kell,

Welcome to the binocular forum. I do not have first hand experience with the Bushnell Legend HD line so I will leave it for others to advise you on that particular choice.

I can, however, confirm that 4.2 mm exit pupil is NOT too small for astronomy. Some of the most experienced observer on these forum use reference standard binoculars: Nikon Superior E 10X42, 12X50, Leica Ultravid, Swarovski EL in 10X42 and the Fujinon 16X70 FMT SX. The Canon 15X50 and 18X50 Image Stabilized binoculars are also very popular.

My own most used astro binoculars are of 12X50, 20X80 and 54X100 configuration. I rarely use binoculars less than 10X from my suburban yard for astronomy. Two decades ago many binoculars astronomy books recommend binoculars with 7 mm exit pupil for astronomy. Not so today. In my experience exit pupil size is one of the least critical factors in astro binocular selection. Any where from 3.5mm to 5.5 mm is fine. If you have really dark skies you may be able to take advantage of 6 mm or bigger exit pupil, but many of us don't.

If 4 mm exit pupil is too small for astronomy then the $5K 3.5 inch Questar scope should not be used with any EP higher than 23X or The $ 9,000 160 mm APO refractor at more than 40X.....

Thanks, I finally decided on the 8x due to the wide fov, which would prove to be more useful for star scanning. I live in a heavily light polluted area for me, so I actually doubt the 10x would be any more different from the 8x in terms of the fov against what I will expect to see.

Anyway i think its probably to conclude that since it's new in the market, not many people might have it, so I will prob do some reports in December after my exams.

Bushnell comparing its new Legend HD to the Monarch in big bold type right across the top of their add says a lot about how highly regarded the Monarch is.

I've used 8x32, 7x42, 10x50, and 16x70 bins for astro use and they all worked great. Of course the best performance for hand-held astro are the 10x50 Porros (Nikon AE), but even the 8x32s (Zeiss Victory) show a heck of a lot.
