Oh hello Wild Duck
      #3410741 - 10/25/09 08:26 PM

Found it! Was looking at the moon and jupiter, and realised the moon was getting me in the vicinity of Aquila and Scutum, and i knew the Wild Duck was over there. Searched around a bit, nothing. Came in and checked out Stellarium, made a mental directions set for myself starting at Aquila, and at the last step of the directions, i looked into my EP and there it was! At first it looked just like a hazy cloud of nebulosity, like M42 always does, and then after time of looking at it, i started seeing more and more stars!
So happy with this find, the south/southwestern sky is the direction of the nearest city to me, so seeing things over there (and of course its LOADED with clusters and nebulas) is damn near impossible.
But, I bagged the Duck!

Now bag it on a night with no moon.
Best view I've ever had of it was with a 1deg+ TFOV, while it was still fully resolved.

Ahhhh The Wild Duck.
I actually found The Wild Duck by accident, I was looking for the swan and when a grey smudge appeared in my 25mm eyepiece I thought I had located it.
Imagine my surprise when I put some mag to it and saw this beautiful cluster.

Congrats. btw did you locate the Dumbell yet?

toastmaster,

Nice job bagging the duck! Another beautiful open cluster is M6, the Butterfly Cluster, near the tip of Scorpius' tail. It's getting pretty low in the sky here in South Texas though.

Now that you've seen the Wild Duck, check out the Double Cluster near Perseus and Cassiopeia (NGC 869 and 884). You get two for the price of one!

Cheers...Eric
