John, Very cool! I didn't know that Unitron even made an Alt-az mount like that. Now is the model 150 a 75mm or 102mm? Looks pretty good size. I think the bigger picture is what happened to your kitchen cabinets?? Most are oak, and then the left side uppers are birch ply? Is this a work in progress?

Hi Rich, yes the whole house is a mess and kitchen still has some more cabinet's too hang. The other cabinet's are at base of telescope in last picture. It is a 102mm with super focuser and I would say pre 1958 model. It is very heavy tube and mount. Did they make them thicker tubes back then john

yes Brian i think your right about age (1958 or earlier). Also nice scope you have ...mine came with both deluxe forcuser's for 3" and 4" with aluminum knob's. They both screw into bushing so easy too change out. the 4' super focuser is on it in picture. Very heavy tube, so like i ask before...did they make tubes thicker back then

this lense assembly came with unitron scope and rubber eyeshield pull's off. It's 1 1/4" diameter by 4" long with nice lense's on both end's. It's all metal and look's like a eyepiece. Fit's in draw tube and no marking's. What is it ...a barlow john

hey john, not sure what year mine is. i will have to do some research. i would think late 70's maybe only because its good shape. i put this one together with legs coming from the netherlands and the cradle from arizona. tripod legs were redone and i made the spreader tray. i currently have (4) 4" unitrons and a 4" jaegertron (no mount)that is custom unitron with a jaeger cell fitted to unitron tube and a longer dewshield i made to slip fit the jaeger's lens cell. also, john take a look inside both ends of your tube and see if there is a metal counterweight inside. (looks like a lead doughnut) i had a couple unitrons that had this counterweight. might be why it feels so heavy. they probably made the tubes thicker back then also. that barlow looks like it might be ATM'ed. show a picture of glass end if you can. Brian

WOW!! brian you are into some nice scope's do you have a warehouse too store all the telescope's i'll try too take picture's of glass end but there's glass on both end's. the black metal at top is beveled so it self centering i guess. it's a very nice "what ever it is" ocular like i said it came with this 50's scope. i'll send too you if you want too look at..meanwhile stay tune, john

John, I am delighted to share a few photos of my Unitron 152. I understand that the tail end and main tube of my scope are not pure Unitron but everything seems to function very well. I believe main tube is made from duralium (unpainted, but seems to have a coating of clear lacquer)… it is very well made… and the objective lens is green coated Unitron housed in a cell without collimation ears. The scope has been well used over the years. My main recent ‘restoration’ (perhaps not the best word for what I have done) included making a box to house the scope and one to house the synchronous motor and control box , extending the latitude screw to allow adjustment to 25 degrees, making and restoring simple collars to hold my 60mm guidescope and making a tray for the tripod. Photos here and below. David

The 60mm guidescope is an Amasco (F = 700mm). I don't know much about this brand. My guess is that it is similar vintage to the Unitron (60s/70s) as it came with the main scope when I purchased the whole set-up from the original owner back in the very early 80s... so at least 70s. The Amasco performs adequately as a guidescope but is not the same quality finish as the Unitron. Cheers David

alpal i sure don't have any. i'am sure there might be other unitron user's who have. So chime in if you have pictures thru your 4" unitron ...john
I hope someone comes up with some pics. I am interested in buying a Unitron 102mm but I would like to see how good they really are. Does the Unihex mirror deteriorate with age? Is it just an optical flat or is it a prism? I am worried that an old Unitron may not perform well.

Thanks John. Wouldn't a prism cause a small amount of colour aberration?

Prizm's are what they use'd for 50 years so they must be good (wave lengh i guess). Beside's if you use camera it's either on outside of optical tube or connected directly thru focuser...so no prizm in picture taking. john

That is a problem with refractors. If the viewed object is high in elevation then you are forced to use a prism. On the other hand it must mean that the Unitron 102mm is good for terestial viewing? (All objects are correct way around & not back to front.)

Still no photos? Strange when you consider that a camera was one of the options.

Hi Alpal,
Here's a moon shot with my Unitron (older than me, maybe from the end of the fifties). I've use a 32 mm celestron plossl, afocal, automatic exposure with a canon a570. Best regards, Strix

Thanks for those pics. The one of Jupiter is great especially considering that you weren't using a high speed camera & stacking the photos. I bet with frame stacking you'd get a lot better? That seems to be as good - if not better than my 8" custom built Newtonian although after 8 attempts I have yet to obtain ideal seeing conditions. There is a nice contrast between the black background & the planet. Refractors may be worth the extra money. It would be nice to have a refractor as well as a Newt. I bet the Unitron would give a better view than many larger SCTs & Newts?
