meade lightbridge shroud? new
      #3405192 - 10/22/09 10:23 PM

hi,
i was going to buy a shroud for the 10" light bridge deluxe i have commming but they are verry expensive and im pretty sure i can make one cheap.my question is what is the best material to make a shroud out of?im going to use strong velcro to attach to the trusses and top and bottom of the scope there will be no sagging into the light path.depending on the material i use im sure i can make one of these for under $20 at wally worlds fabric center.id rather spend my money on bobs knobs for my scope.this will be my first large scope i cant wait so pumped.

thanks
Russell

Russell, you will definitely need to insert 2 stiff rings to keep the LB's light path "clean". Check the shroud at scopestuff.com from Astrozap (good design that works very well).

I would do what is done often on these, use the drawstring end treatment. Mine is not stretchy material, but it has the hoops mentioned above. The hoops can be made from thin ABS. You can get suitable material from project binders, coat hangers, what ever you fancy.

You could by one of those nylon laundry bags with a draw string at the dollar store and convert it. I used a big one of those for a while as a cover for my 10" LB until I got the shroud I have.

I used some velor material I got at WallyWorld from the discount material pile, $1.00/yd. I bought all they had. I use a draw string around the top, above the truss's knobs, so I can pull it down pretty tight. I put gromets around the bottom, and use bungee cord hooked under the mirror bucket to keep it tight. I don't have a problem with it getting into the light path, but mine is on much tighter than any other I have ever seen, and it MAY in a breeze deflect into the lightpath. A ring or 2 of some stiffer material around the circumference would fix it if I have that problem. I don't use it except when kids are around. Not so much to block light, but to keep anything from falling (or being dropped, or curious fingers, etc) off the mirror.
