Basic mirror cell question new
      #3413446 - 10/27/09 05:05 AM

I want to make a 3 point mirror cell for an 8" f6 and I would rather not use clips that intrude on the mirror.

Is there a way to do it without glue?

If I use glue, how do I remove the mirror for cleaning etc?

Ideally I'd like a set-up where the mirror is easily removable as my project is a travel scope.

This is my first ever ATM project so I'm right at the bottom of the learning curve!

My first (and only so far) ATM project was a 8" f/6 travel scope too

I glued the mirror to the cell. To clean the mirror I simply remove the cell with the mirror still glued on it.

More on the mirror cell here:

With a f/6 scope I strongly recommend a front-collimatable cell. It makes life much easier.

Thanks Vincent that's really useful - the front-collimatable cell looks like a very good idea.

But my mirror is old and needs recoating - I plan on doing it once I've made the scope and know it works. So any gluing I do during construction would need to be undone as soon as the project is finished.

How would you remove the mirror from the cell for recoating? It looks like it would be a delicate operation involving a thin blade or maybe wire to get through the glue. Then presumably the removal of any residue. This is what's putting me off the glue idea. Though nor am I enamoured of diffraction- and stress-inducing clips.

Silicon can be easily removed with a thin blade. What bothers me most is ideed the residue.

As you want to do just a try, that is just check that you can obtain an image and focus, maybe you could pake temporay clips for the try and glue the mirror once it's recoated.

Do you know how good the mirror is? Was it hand-made or is it an industrial mirror?

I'm using the mirror set from my Orion SkyQuest. One option would be to use the mirror cell from the scope but it only supports the mirror round its edge and I'm hoping to come up with something better. I could always use the clips from it, as you suggest, at least until I get things working.

Properly installed clip do NOT induce stress.
