Help on Zhumell focuser info new
      #3406475 - 10/23/09 03:08 PM

Hello there,

Haven’t been on CN for a long time, kinda feeling strange while typing here…

I am thinking to upgrade the focuser on my homemade 12” Dob. I did a little research and learned that the Zhumell 2” Craford Dual Speed Focuser is a good “bang for the buck”, though unfortunately it is nowhere to find in the market. But before keeping my fingers crossed waiting, I want to know if it will my Dob well. If it is not a good fit then I should go after alternatives.

So proud owners of this focuser please help me. What is its racked-in height, with and without the 1.25” adapter? What is its travel distance. And finally, what was it sold at while still in the market?

Thanks and happy observing.

Qianniu

Please check this site for details you requested and availability. ScopeStuff

I have found the one that came with my telescope to be very nice to use.

I have the version of that focuser for a 8" scope. My guess is all that changes is the curve on the base of the focuser.

From the scope surface to the top of the focuser without the adapter is (in inches):
Min: 2 7/8 Max: 4 9/16

With Adapter:
Min: 3 1/4 Max: 4 9/16

It's a nice upgrade over a R&P focuser.

Thank you very much David. That really helps! It is probably a little too high for my Dob, which needs a low profile focuser with racked-in height somewhere between 2"-2.5". I can probably push the collimation screws on the primary mirror cell to compensate for that. But then the questions is where can I get one

Check the ScopeStuff link that Cames posted. They sell them there. They even have a low profile one that might be what you need.

The Zhumell scopes use a GSO crayford focuser. These are available on e-bay, or you may get lucky and find a used one here or at astromart. The Zhumells and meade light bridges use the same focusers, but only the deluxe model LB have the 2 speed focuser. As for scope stuff I believe they carry these in both the regular height and the low profile. What it sounds like you are looking for is the GSO 2" low profile Crayford focuser.

Thanks all for the information! I got all my questions answered.

I think I'll hang around looking for a used one. If no luck by the time spring comes I'll get a new one.
