Images using a 120ST
      #3414615 - 10/27/09 06:21 PM

I would be interested in seeing some images taken using an Astroview 120ST or similar scope. I have the Astroview and would like to experiment with astro-imaging but I'm not sure that it is worth the investment, in time or money, with that scope. Images or comments are welcome! Thanks.

Keith

I tried out a 120ST for a while back in Oct '05. It can take some half-decent images with a minus violet or fringe-killer filter. I was just starting out with digital back then and had lots of fun with just a minimal investment.

M11, 120ST, 3x120 sec @ ISO 800, Canon 300D

M27, 12x120 sec @ ISO 800, 120ST, Canon 300D

It could be used for imaging with narrowband filters like H-alpha.

I was going to also going to point out that each of these shots show quite abit of coma, which is common for this scope. Also, you will have some false color in your phots's. I removed it from these with Noel's tools in PS. However, for just getting your feet wet in Astrophotography, this scope is great. It is a low cost alternative to some of the equipment that you can get, and still achieve reasonable results. As a beginner, I was (and still am) very, very happy with these shots.

Thanks to each of you for sharing your 120ST photos. It looks like it will be worth the effort to use this scope as an intro into astrophotography.

I am grateful that there is a resource like Cloudy Nights to ease us novices into amateur astronomy!
