Vixen 1991 - in the wake of the 80s real estate orgy, Japan was in a mood to party with the stars - and so were monks with a dubious attachment to sheep, concert pianists and their music turners, would-be pop stars, surly plutocrats, and ether-sniffing doctors (how else to explain checking an RFT for a pulse?)

I know these funny telescope pictures from the German Vixen catalogue of that vintage 
However, the catalogue itself was differing greatly to the one that you posted the link of. Basically, the catalogue that I mean did ONLY have this kind of funny pictures. The 200 mm Newton was shown with a cleaning lady, if I remember correctly.

I have their 1994 catalog and it shows the identical "props" in it. At the time I was attempting to understand the logic behind the ad. Never came up with a personal answer.

As for the monks - many ages ago, most monasteries were somewhat self sufficient with farming and raising livestock right at the top of important things to do on a daily basis (along with prayer and brewing your own beer - not a bad life :-) So a monk carrying a small lamb or similar would not be unusual. And don't forget St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals who is said to have been able to communicated with them... See, the Japanese know what they're talking about :-)

Actually - I just took a second peek at that page - that's not a monk's garb, its more like a 19th century pastor's outfit - so that means the pastor is telling his flock (congregation) to look to heaven ;-) Those witty Japanese :-)

Those are odd for sure. I can guess the story logic behind most, except for the guy with the sheep. What is that supposed to represent and what is his costume supposed to be? That strangeness of that reminded me of a calendar I saw once hanging in a Chinese restaurant in Brockport, N.Y. It was for a restaurant supply company and I swear to you that all the pictures on the calendar were of pretty girls holding puppies! What in the world were they thinking.

In Christian teachings Christ is sometimes symbolically represented as the Shepherd and his followers as his flock. Clergy are also sometimes referred to as shepherds and their congregation as their flock.
