Do you have to change MallinCam settings often? new
      #3412389 - 10/26/09 04:23 PM

I see that a few of you operate your scopes remotely and view on a monitor from the comfort of your home or a room in your observatory.

For those of you who do, does this require trips out to the telescope to adjust the MallinCam settings? Or are there general settings that get you through the majority of your DSO viewings so that you have to make few trips to the focuser/scope?

Generally you can keep the same settings for viewing most DSOs but when you are looking at some of the brighter ones changing the settings definitely helps. The other mode is when you are searching for an object (assuming your goto hasn't put the object in the fov) where short integration times are more useful. This is where it gets to be a problem.

You can build or purchase RS485 or RS232 cables (depending on the era of your Mallincam) that with a free piece of s/w gives you the ability to control the onscreen menu items from a PC. Unfortunately what you cannot control via this built in interface are the external switches which give you access to the wide range of integration times.

I believe that Rock Mallin (the guy behind the Mallincam) is planning to release a camera system with PC control of all the functions/options. Hopefully Jack H. can give us some more details?

Thanks for the information. I don't have a camera yet but I will be getting on the list for the VSS.

My goal is to be able to roll my scope out into my drive way and control it and the camera from the comfort of my porch where I will have the monitor.

With the VSS, complete exposure control will not be possible remotely. But 3 exposure settings can be selected from the software. In addition, all camera menu functions can be adjusted via the software as well. If the exposure control is set to 15 seconds (anywhere from 3.3 seconds to 56 seconds is possible), using the software, one will have the ability to select remotely 2.1 seconds, 15 seconds and 30 seconds - HYPER OFF, HYPER ON, and HYPER X2.

Thanks again Jack. Got a few months wait for the VSS, but it should be worth it.

Between working late and getting up early for work, my trips to the closest dark site have been severly hampered for the past few years. I'm hoping the Mallincam will get me out more and have me seeing more from the edge of a white LP zone, otherwise known as my driveway in densely suburban NJ.
