Yeah, I suspected that. But I tried to search and didn't find anything. Anyhow, you can never have too many opportunities to drool over equipment you can't afford

The NTM500 mount is another direct drive unit... It can slew 100 degrees a second. There is a video on the net of it slewing around from east to west horizon with a C11 or C14 on it.. RA + DEC going all over the place.... One of the guys in the room with it comments "So, do you think the celestron will survive?"

It looks pretty damn awesome too... There are definitely some exciting new mounts being released at the moment... The ASA DDM series, the NTM mounts, the Choronis mount...

It used to be an easy choice...
"If I win lotto, Im buying a Paramount." Simple...

Now its, "If I win lotto, should I Get <<Insert one of 4 different mounts here>>"

They are all nice, but why to we have to pay the price of a small car for a mount? Can't they make things less expensive? I don't think the motors are all that expensive.

They could very well make the mount less 'big'.

If they put a direct drive in the body the size of the vixen SXD for instance, wouldn't that be cheaper???

ASA is coming out with a smaller mount, the SM40, rated at 20 kg payload, 5,000 euro.

There's also a much larger one in the future, rated at 150kg payload, the DDM 120. 19,000 euros.

Clear skies!

It wont be long before one of the Chinese manufacturers produces a direct drive mount derived from one of these beasts..

I must say, until I see real world results for one of these mounts, The Paramount is still top of my wishlist.

and I'll be one of the first in line to get one. I think the combination of a Chinese manufacturer for the hardware and open source for the controlling software could really be a winner in this case.

I'd truly love to see more amateurs making their own telescopes and mounts again.

The Mel Bartels and Sidereal Technology goto kits can be configured to work with just about any existing mount - including the classics from 40-50 years ago.

But maybe I'm dreaming of the "good old days".

Most of the new stuff is way too rich for my blood.

Hi JOejoe,

ASA developed a upgrade for the EQ6 with high resolution ecoders in both axis and autoslew software by Philipp Keller. We expect no autoguiding for 5 minutes or more.

Nice looking mount!! My only concern is their use of Renishaw encoders. Thes encoders ARE unbelivably accurate. I have used them on many projects over the years. In controlled conditions (temp, humidity, dust etc) they perform as advertised. When thrown out into the real world we have had many problems develope in very short time spans. Things like dust and high humidity can wreak havoc with this type of encoder. Also they are partially responsible for the high cost of these mounts. The fractional arc second versions can cost around $1500 per axis!

My .02 worth
Kevin

I'm sure at some point someone will reverse engineer these mounts and clone them for us less $$$ fortunate folks. Gears may become obsolete?

Looking at their website, I can't see any sign of the SM40. There is the DDM60, which has a capacity of 25kg and is priced at 6,500 euros.

chicot,

I think they nixed the SM40. I believe the DDM60 is going to be their smallest.

It is still twice the money of an AP 1200....amazing technology but I think prices need to get down to under 10K USD like the AP 1200 before it truly becomes an Amateur Astronomy tool for the masses adn even that might be pushing it.

First, the big DDM is rated at about 143lbs...substantially more than the AP1200. There's no wormgear driven mount that will match the out of the box PE of this mount. The price is about the same as the Paramount ME. And the thing is equipped with a laser for the PA routine. How cool is that? Did someone say lottery tickets?

Second, I spoke with one of the ASA reps at the AIC about the EQ6 encoders. He said the project has been shelved in favor of work on their new mounts.
