There is a bird forum that talked about the Baader Zoom when they first hit the market.
http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=73147
Reading the forum I came across the following ...
"Baader zoom arrived today. I had limited time to test it, mainly comparing it to the Zeiss zoom. I'll post a more complete review, but I can safely say now that its light transmission, contrast and color accuracy are superour to the Zeiss zoom. It's comparable to the very best complex eyepieces in those categories. The clickstop indications are wildly inaccurate. 20mm is actually about 13mm, 16mm is about 10mm. The 8mm-24mm range appears to be about right. I'm trying to arrange to borrow a friend's Zeiss 85mm to see how it does on the Zeiss scope. Attachment to the Diascope is not like the Zeiss eyepieces. The Baader has a large thread rather than the Zeiss bayonet. There must be some large thread on the back of the Diascope (for camera attachment maybe?)."
Same forum and thread 2 years later mentions the following ...
"The importer says that the click stops are now accurately labeled and the new eyepieces are supplied with both 2" and 1.25" barrels. The optics and the housing are supposed to be unchanged so I wouldn't expect it to reach focus in the Pentax scopes."
Anyway, my question for owners of the first release of these zooms is have you noticed any out of expected range with the click stops?

Without getting technical , the one I have seems to be about right at the labeled positions .

That old thread was one of the firsts and a basis for getting my Hyperion zoom (among many many others that I've researched) - I just made sure that the one I was buying ("used" mint $180) came with a 2" adapter; mine has the black anodized adapter from a year ago and the clickstop settings are right on the money.

yes, the thread is old, but with recent updates.
It is an interesting read and informative.
When the next hyperion zoom shipment arrives I wonder if some of the older Hyperion zooms with click stop problems will start showing up on the used market.

I interchanged some e-mails with Thomas Baader respect the Baader Zoom. Thomas told me that there was three generations of Zooms. 1.- The first series has an error in the clic-labelling positions, no 2" adapter. 2.- The second corrected the position and inverted the types of the marks, 2" adapter was an option. 3.-The third one includes an o-ring in the ocular lens which is usefull to operate under wet conditions or rain (not astronomers, I know, but for birdwatching)and includes in the box the 2" adapter.
I own the fist one plus an 2" adapter

Remains to be seen but with the BH zoom's reputation soaring, I've seen more of the Televue and Vixen 8-24mm zooms hitting the used mart with just a sprinking of Hyperions which are snapped up quite quickly when ever they do make an appearance.

No one knows whether these zooms are being sold with the intent to replace them with the Hyperion zoom; or whether the owners simply decided zooms are not for them.

No one implied that they were being replaced with the Hyperion zooms.

Thank you Arbacia for your historical update. From readings in the other forum I suspected 3, for sure 2 generations of the Hyperion Zoom.

Thanks for posting the pic; it's a 3rd and latest generation in all likelihood; they used to come in the 2-piece all-white box (like mine) and this new 1-piece box started to appear early 2009 from reports received.

FWIW, checked my records -- got mine in Sep 2007. 3rd generation, with the ocular, and the 2" barrel in the box. I think it was one box -- can't recall. If memory serves, it also came with a black bag.

The colourful box was in late units of 3rd generation. 1st, 2nd and early 3rd was housed in white boxes. Personaly I prefer the old style as I used as a tray inside my EPs case.
Also in some point the 1,25" barrels were made in black instead than in chrome. This is also true for normal hyperions (such as my 24mm unit)
I used the Vixen-Televue zoom and is poorer quality. The baader is very close to the Zeiss.
Cheers, Patricio
