How much does the moon affects dark skies?
      #3419051 - 10/29/09 08:13 PM

I normally take pictures from fairly dark skies with a Bortle scale of 4-4.5. I can go out to a dark location that would be close to a 2. My question is at what point is it useless to go. If the moon is at a quarter should I just image from home? I know the spectrum of street lights and the moon are not the same, but I just don't know if there is a difference when imaging. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

I would ask, how much trouble is it to get to the dark sky? If you can avoid the man made glow it should help your image. The moon will still be a problem, but you can shoot clusters all night long! Longer exposures wash out, but you should be able to collect some nice data at shorter durations.
